A Christmas Carol

Tommy and me at the theatre!
So in Houston over Thanksgiving, Mama Trammel and Katherine took us to see a production of my (Chloe's) homeboy Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol - A Ghost Story of Christmas at the Alley Theatre, directed by James Black. And I'm not just saying this because I love Dickens and I love love love this story, but this was genuinely one of the best - if not the best - play or anything like it I've seen to date. This was better than most movies! Especially the special effects.

Anyone in the Houston area, or the Texas area, or the United States that has access to an airplane and Texas, needs to go see it before it ends. It was phenomenal. The actor who played Scrooge, Jeffrey Bean, gave him a heart - buried real deep down - and a sense of humor and spirit that a lot of adaptations exclude. Scrooge was mean and grinchy, but would entertain the audience with puns and engagement as he interacted with the apparitions he saw...especially the Christmas Present scene when he joins in on the parlor games his nephew plays with his dinner party where he finds out what he's missing out on by being resentful and cold. I loved his character...that's why I love going to plays - the characters are much more accessible and lively than in movies, and you can actually interact with them.

Tim Burton meets Charles Dickens
Another thing that was awesome - THE GHOSTS!! I had forgotten how much of a ghost story A Christmas Carol really is. This production of it opened with 6 really scary, "Haunted Mansion" ghosts in really thick fog and day-glo that follow Scrooge like the sound of Marley's chains throughout the play. It was really, really fantastic. The three ghosts and Marley were fantastic, and each of those four actors played other characters that Scrooge dealt with daily - Marley was his chambermaid, in Victorian drag, and it was hilarious. Makes me really appreciate Dickens' craft and knack for entertainment while telling people how to be kind to each other.

I wish there was Youtube feed so that you could see it. Anyways, it was fantastic, and I wish I could see it over again. You can find out more about the play here.

Going Home for Thanksgiving

Tomorrow we leave to fly home to Houston for Thanksgiving. We are so ready to get out of here and take a vacation. This week will be a good opportunity to relax. We are going to a play, "A Christmas Carol", at the Houston Theater of Preforming Arts, and possibly a trip up to Dallas to see Deanna and Mark. Good bye Buena Vista for a few days, hope you aren't here when we get back!

Not Fun vs. Fun

Work is not fun. School is not fun. A super cold house in the morning is not fun. The tiniest kitchen on Planet Earth is not fun.

Driving away from Buena Vista is fun. Watching LOST on Hulu is fun. Planning our escape is fun.

Kentucky Butter Cake

I made this cake to take to dinner at our friends' house last night - and it was so good that I figured that I should share it with everyone. It's one of my favorite cakes from my childhood; it's been at all the Christmas/Easter/Thanksgiving and Birthdays/family functions since I can remember, and it could quite possibly be the best (and easiest) bundt cake in the world.

Try it out and tell me what you think!!

Kentucky Butter Cake
Cake:
3 cups good all-purpose or unbleached flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk*
1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened
2 teaspoons vanilla or rum extract

Butter Sauce:
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter or margarine
3 tablespoons water
1 to 2 teaspoons vanilla or rum extract

Powdered or  confectioners sugar
Whipped cream, if desired

*To substitute for buttermilk (like I had to!), use 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice plus milk to make 1 cup. You can't tell the difference.

Heat oven to 325 F. Generously grease and lightly flour 12-cup fluted tube pan (a standard Bundt pan) or 10-inch tube pan (I recommend using a Bundt pan). Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. In a large bowl, blend all cake ingredients at low speed until moistened. Beat 3 minutes at medium speed. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 325 F for 55 to 70 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

In small saucepan over low heat, combine all sauce ingredients, stirring occasionally until butter melts. DO NOT BOIL. Using long-tined fork, prick cake 10 to 12 times. Slowly pour hot sauce over cake. Let it soak!! Remove cake from pan immediately after sauce has been absorbed, 5 to 10 minutes. Just before serving sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with whipped cream. Makes 12 servings.

This is how good it is...I couldn't capture it before it was half gone!

Close up...it's so rich and yummy...the center of each slice will be soaked with the sugar-butter sauce!

Temple Day, and other things.

Woah, it's been a month! It's crazy how time flies by when you've got lots and lots to do. I don't mind, September isn't my favorite anyways...it's all about the holiday seasons, baby! Now it's October and it's finally getting chilly...I bought (at first against my better judgment) a heather gray $6 pair of Haynes sweatpants from Wal-Mart...THEY ARE THE BEST THINGS EVER!!!!! So comfy. And relatively stylish! Everyone needs one. Wonderful stocking stuffers. Also, Tommy and I are in a Bee Gees phase. We love everything Gibb...I love Barry, especially. We try to sing the harmonies to "Nights on Broadway" in the car all the time. We're weird, but groovy, so it's okay.

Today was SVU's Temple Service Day, where we get off school and have the chance to go to the DC temple instead and give service. Since Tommy and I didn't want to pay for gas ($60!), we got up at 6 am to hitch a ride with the student wards in charter buses. Needless to say, I am so thankful that I'm not single anymore...and that I'm not a freshman anymore. But it was great because we got to go to the temple, and the ride and lunch was free, and you can't beat that! I hadn't been to the temple since we got married, and I really was aching to go back. It's not as close as the LA temple was to my house back in California, but it's still important to me to go as much as I can. I just plain love being there, it's so pretty and quiet and everyone is friendly. Sometimes, worship aside, you just want to be in a quiet, pretty place with nice people.

Here's some pics of Tommy and I at the temple, taken from our sweet new EVOS! We're obviously not good at phone cam picture taking. Ha ha. Can you tell how tired we were?

Well, life is good. Lacrosse and softball are keeping us busy. I'm being bit by spiders and gnats like crazy! My legs swell up so bad! And, I got bitten by a spider on my chin and my forehead, at the same time. Hopefully the bugs will go away when it gets cold enough. There's Gold Bond, Cortisone cream, and another generic bug bite cream on my bedside table...Tommy hasn't been touched by the plague! That's a good thing, though. I'm happy for him. (NOT!)

I really need to write here more. I need to write more, period! I am getting serious in writing my book now...I've already outlined it as far as I want to, and can't wait to continue the arduous typing process. Tommy's hoping that it'll sell big so that he can live off my money...so am I! He's also encouraging me to write children's novels, and I'm really considering it. I could even illustrate them myself! Those were the books that influenced me the most growing up (Redwall, Madeline L'Engle, books by Avi) and they're the most imaginative. With adults, you have to depict their world and characters that they can understand, or else you lose their interest. With kids, you relate through imagination...which is how I still learn about and understand and express how I see life. Go figure! So stay tuned on the children's novels...my next great American novels on the forefront.

Weird factoid about me: I enjoy typing, and type faster, when I'm wearing nail polish. Hmm.

Also, I got a design internship at SVU! It's super awesome, 10 hrs a week designing posters and digital media. More on that later!

I'm really enjoying completing my Art major this semester. My adv. oil painting class is so much fun - I have my own studio space, with a huge window! Buying paints and canvas is not fun. But...worth it to me. I'm working on a panel for an exhibition at the DC visitor's center called "Fulfill the Vision"... I'm not sure they're gonna like mine, but who cares. It's called "Bambina" and was orig. part of a triptych sort of thing that I did. I finally feel like I've found my groove, and what I want to do with my artwork. Professor Himes said that it was "exciting" and let me talk about it in front of our class. That's a good sign, right?

Here's a picture of it. For the exhibition, I'm painting the figure on the turquoise and white below, instead of the black. A little too black for an LDS show, I guess. (It's applied with a pallet knife and a tiny tiny brush, took me forever! I don't know how Bob Ross did all his pallet knifing in 30 minutes. Maybe because he's really Santa Claus.)

You can't see it, but the turquoise is mixed with white streaks. I'll add new pics when its finished. I've since finished the background, and it dried a really pretty light blue instead. Happy little accidents, as B.R. would say.

So, that's all for now! Miss my families.

Funny Wedding Pic

I wanted to post this because I thought it was funny. I look like a cake topper! My sweet husband is so attractive. I love us. More wedding pics and a post coming soon.

The one on the left is a really good one...I am so in love with Tommy, it's crazy!!

Here's where I look like the cake topper! I'm impressed with my form. That's how they had to carry me off of the temple grounds, actually - I was so stiff with taking pictures! I was glad we did, though...they're beautiful.

Woah!

We're married! Hey-oh! Crazy! I had totally forgot about this thing until last week, then totally forgot about it until now. Typical.

Anyhow, I guess I should write a sort of update, for whomever wants to read about us. [Which is you, Deanna ;) ] Tommy and I have moved into our little house in Buena Vista, Virginia, a couple blocks away from the SVU campus. Which is a good distance for me...it's far enough that I can have an excuse not to walk to school, and close enough that I can still be lazy in the morning and get up 5 minutes before class starts and be there on time. That applies to Tommy too! But our house is great - tiny tiny tiny, but with just about everything we need...except for a microwave. GAH it's killing me not to have a microwave! There's a limit to how much stuff you can reheat in the oven in Corningware! Our kitchen smells like cats, but that's okay too. Our bathroom is narrow, but tons of counter space for my hair and makeup regiments...Tommy loves it! I love our little living room too...we got the sweet sleek-looking futon from Target with wedding money...yeah, who's got the coolest cat-smelling house now?!

School has started again, and it's going to be a busy semester. I'm taking a second senior paper class on Faulkner (Just for fun...I only have to write 12 pages this time!), Art History with Tommy, and 3 art classes - Oil painting, sculpture, and 2D design...that one's also with Tommy. We figured we'd save on textbooks and gas and homework (jk) if we took the same classes, since we're both studying Art. Tommy's taking a whole bunch of business classes - Personal/Family Finance, Principles of Marketing, and Spanish 3. Textbooks were not cheap! But it's okay, we'll use them for bonfire material later. And on top of all that, I have my softball pre-season starting in a couple of weeks, and Tommy's lacrosse pre-season has already started...we're two busy ducks! Tommy's finishing up the schedules of his team's games for next semester - man, he does so much work for that team! Late nights emailing coaches, organizing player stuff, talking to the school admin, all the frustration...I wish the guys appreciated him more, but hey that's just me. Who listens to the wife, anyways...

SO. Needless to say that we've got lots to do! I'm going to mail out all like 100 thank you cards next week after Labor Day...geez, all the work FOR the wedding AFTER it's over! I just want to make sure that everyone's accounted for...but you married ladies know how it goes. But we still find time to have fun...we went to see "The Other Guys" with Will Ferrel and my fave Mark Wahlberg...GO SEE IT!! Omg it was so funny. I actually liked Will Ferrel in this one...and that's saying a lot, for me. Anyways, that one was good! But that's about the extent of my "spending money to do something fun" excursions for the month. If you don't count buying textbooks, paying rent, paying utilities, paying for internet, paying for a copy of our marriage license, paying for health insurance, paying for gas...

Alright I'm stopping!
